What is Semax?

Semax is a small molecule called a "peptide". A peptide is a short sequence of amino acids — the basic building blocks of proteins.

It was developed in the late 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, seeking to stabilize a natural fragment of a hormone called ACTH.

This fragment (positions 4 to 10 of ACTH) is known to influence memory and learning, but it is very rapidly degraded in the body. Adding a Pro-Gly-Pro motif to its end prolongs its duration of action.

Semax reproduces a portion of a natural hormone (ACTH), but without its hormonal action. Only the effect on the central nervous system is retained.

Unlike caffeine or amphetamines, Semax does not act as an abrupt "jolt": it is studied as a subtle modulator of several neurochemical systems.

Questions fréquentes

Is Semax a medication?

In Russia, yes, for certain cognitive and neurological indications. In the United States, Europe and most other countries, it is not approved for general use. PHL presents it for educational and reference purposes only (Research Use Only).

Why is it administered nasally in studies?

The intranasal route provides rapid access to the central nervous system via the nasal mucosa. This is the administration mode described in the majority of scientific publications.

Is Semax a stimulant?

No. Established: unlike caffeine or amphetamines, it does not act through direct, rapid stimulation. It is described in the literature as a discreet modulator of several neurochemical systems.

Are there clinical trials outside Russia?

To be studied: large-scale randomized controlled trials published outside Russia remain limited. This is one of the reasons why Semax is not yet approved by the FDA or the EMA.

What side effects have been reported?

Established: publications mainly report good short-term tolerability, with rare effects (nasal irritation, transient fatigue). To be studied: the full long-term profile, across large populations, is not yet consolidated.

Can it be combined with Selank?

Some Russian publications mention combined use (cognitive stimulation from Semax, anxiolytic action from Selank). However, this combination has not been the subject of large-scale international trials.
